Fly me to the moon (2.0)

This is an Emily Miller piece, she of the guerilla poster art (and more!). Keep an eye out, you’ll see more of her work around town. A lot of it is animal-themed, but here she goes in another direction – up! This particular space traveler is found on the backside of 1006 Buchanan Street. If you look for that address on Google it leads you to Otis James, who makes bespoke clothing. The web page suggests the business is in Oak Ridge, but the Facebook page puts it here in Nashville on Buchanan. Call them, or just order online if you are interested. I might need a new hat. Regardless, this is paper art outdoors so I have to call it endangered art.

UPDATE: I added 2.0 to the title because I realized this is the second time I’ve used that headline.

Located at 1006 Buchanan Street. The mural/poster is on the back wall. There’s a large green space around the building so it’s easy to approach. Street parking is available.

And her hair was an unfolded flower

Located in in the heart of the Buchanan Street neighborhood, this is impressive piece is a Norf Collective creation, signed by Woke3 (also known as Jay Jenkins). The Buchanan Street area has begun to see signs of gentrification. The building this work is on, which apparently used to be an auto body store, is currently unoccupied, its fate unknown. It’s hard to believe a future tenant would want to remove this mural, but I think we still have to qualify this as endangered art. (The title was inspired by a line from a Yeates poem.)

Located at 1114 Buchanan Street, at the corner with 12th Avenue North. Street parking available on 12th. And maybe grab a bite at Mai-Bee’s Southern Cuisine across the street, which sports a mural of its own I’ll feature later.

Angels will rise

“Angels will rise” is written on the bottom of the Seventh Letter mural found on the old Best Way Tire Service building at the corner of 2nd, Lafayette, and McCann. Some internet sleuthing suggest that the two tags read “Revok” and “Sever.” These are the tags of a couple of active graffiti artists, but perhaps because the mural is as old as it is (it is dated 2001), I’ve not been able to definitively link it to the artists currently using those handles. In any event, it’s hard to say how long this particular survivor will continue to exist. Best Way Tire Service has been closed for some time and the building is in a state of disrepair. Given that development is on the march in Chesnut Hill, and the proximity of this site to the heart of downtown, the days of this mural may be numbered. Let’s call it endangered art.

UPDATE: The Seventh Letter is a well-established graffiti crew based out of Los Angeles.

The address for the building is 206 McCann Street, but that doesn’t quite capture it. This building lies on the southwest corner of the three-way crossing of Second Avenue South, McCann Street, and Lafayette Street, about a block south of I-40. The mural faces Second, on the east side of the building. Street parking on McCann is probably your best bet.

The ghost of craft beers past

This quiet bit of whimsy is all that’s left of the Boscos in Hillsboro Village, which closed back in September 2014. Signs and advertisements can often long outlive the establishment they once promoted. How long this sign, located on the back wall of the old Boscos, will last is questionable. A new restaurant, Hopdoddy Burger Bar is slated to take over the space sometime this year, and it’s anybody’s guess if they’ll leave our tuxedoed server in a chef’s hat in place. Call it endangered art.

UPDATE: This piece has been painted over.

Located at 1805 21st Avenue South. The sign is on the back (west) side of the building facing the parking lot. It’s Hillsboro Village – have fun trying to park, and don’t expect it to be free. Check it out on your next excursion to HV, but you might want to make it soon. This sign might be gone at any moment.

Color me gone – soon

The days of this playful box of color on Nolensville Pike are numbered – and that’s a good thing. Conexión Américas, part of the Casa Azafrán community, recently unveiled plans for turning the property into a park. A quiet green space on busy, crazy Nolensville will certainly be a welcome thing. While this building, painted by some of the folks from Casa Azafrán, will disappear, plans for the park demonstrate that its multi-colored spirit will live on.

UPDATE: This building has been demolished.

Located at 2187 Nolensville Pike. Plenty of parking, both here and next door at Casa Azafrán. Stop by, visit the Casa, and donate to the park fund!

Two Lions

Call this endangered art. These two lions on their columns grace the entrance of Auto Express on Charlotte Avenue. Problem is, Auto Express seems to be very much out of business, and a sign indicates that the property is available. Given how development has been exploding on Charlotte, this blog post may soon be some of the only evidence that these two creatures ever did battle over a steering wheel.

Located at 3324 Charlotte Avenue. The business is closed, so parking is easy to come by. I’d suggest you shop for a new car, but you’ll have to do it somewhere else.

Giraffes, etc.

The old ATN Restaurant Equipment building at 11th and Grundy is looking a bit worse for wear. While I can find no information on its future, I imagine it’s ripe for development. Which is why the various pieces on it are likely endangered. This piece, on the doors of the old loading dock, is not signed, but it sure looks like an Emily Miller piece. It’s paper glued to the door, so it’s fragile anyway. This is on the side that faces 11th, as is the large graffiti tag below. The face and the admonition to breath face Grundy.

Located in the Gulch at the corner of 11th Avenue North and Grundy Street. There’s a gravelly area in front of the building where you can park, as well as street parking.
