A fading cut

Barbershop sign mural street art Nashville

This version of Miles Barbershop on Jefferson, along with La Unique Hair Design, is closed and has been for some time. What relationship it might have with the Miles Barbershop and Hair Salon on Ewing in northeast Nashville or the Miles Barbershop off Hickory Hollow in Antioch, I don’t know, though the fonts used in their different signs seem the same.  The damage from weather and mold is obvious for both the signs and the buildings, but they are a reminder that fancy hand-painted signs are nothing new. This kind of signage used to be common along the Jefferson and Buchan Street corridors, but there is less of it now. Jefferson Street is changing rapidly, and the fate of this building and its deteriorating signs is anybody’s guess. Maybe a future tenant will preserve the signs representing the old neighborhood, as happened when Lockeland Table moved into the old home of Boutique Coiffures.

Located at 1609 Jefferson Street. The signs are on the east side of the building. There is easy parking at this spot.

Lockeland Boutique

The small brick building at the corner of Woodland and 16th Street has a long history. Starting out as an H.G. Hills in the 1930s, it became the beauty shop and salon Boutique Coiffures sometime around 1970. That’s what it was when I moved to the Lockeland Springs neighborhood about fifteen years ago. Of course today the building houses one of the best restaurants in Nashville, Lockeland Table, which opened in 2012. Thankfully, the owners of Lockeland Table kept the wonderful mural of the previous tenants, no doubt confusing the occasional tourist. It is also a reminder of just how much this neighborhood has changed, not just once, but many times. It is reminiscent of some of the older murals found in the Buchanan Street neighborhood. Located at 1520 Woodland Street. The mural is on the east side of the building, facing 16th Street. Street parking is available, particularly on 16th Street. Get you some grub and enjoy the art!

Red, white and blue barber

When your business sits on a street named after your competitor, who is less than a block away, and when that competitor gets business in part because of his very famous daughter, it helps to have a bright colorful sign to help you stand out. Not that Reed and Sons Barbershop needs to worry too much about the competition from Vernon Winfrey’s Barber Shop. Both have been around for quite awhile and have loyal clienteles that have in some cases been coming for decades. Founded by Carl Reed fifty-eight years ago, it is now run by his grandson Tony D. Reed. Both Carl and Tony A. Reed (Tony D.’s father) can still be found cutting hair from time to time. A 2015 photo found in the Tennesee Ledger story linked above shows the facade as being orange, so this more colorful version is recent. In a rapidly gentrifying Nashville, it’s good to see such an important local institution continuing to thrive.

Located at 410 Vernon Winfrey Avenue. The facade above faces Lischey Avenue. Free street parking is readily available. Get a trim and enjoy the art!

Shave and a haircut

Beene’s Barbershop on Chester Avenue is old school, at least in the sense of not seeming to have a website. The one review on Yelp is pretty glowing, though, so who needs a website? They have in common with a number of local, non-chain barbershops in town a painting or drawing of a barber’s pole decorating the store. Beene’s goes a little father, with a full-scale mural that incorporates a Titans logo. This more elaborate mural is good because Beene’s lies along a stretch of Gallatin that is dense with murals, and some small decoration would never cut it. I will be posting soon about some of Beene’s more elaborate neighbors, but I thought I’d start small with this more modest (compared to Beene’s neighbors) installation.

UPDATE: This building has been demolished, the mural along with it.

Located on the west wall of Beene’s Barbershop, which is found at 1102 Chester Avenue, visible from Gallatin Avenue along the 2400 block, behind Subways. Not a lot of parking at Beene’s itself, but plenty of street parking and parking at nearby businesses. And hey, maybe you need a haircut?
