Not an object (Norf Wall gallery, part 6)

This piece is signed by ArJae @caffeinedream. The artist also apparently goes by Sanctus ArJae Syyreal. Oddly, this piece doesn’t seem to be featured on his Instagram page. Striking as it is, I have to tag it “hidden art,” because it’s one of the pieces that is usually behind a locked gate, in the interior courtyard of the old tire factory on 19th near Herman. See Part 1 for a description of how this and the other pieces at this site came to be.

See the pin for Part 1 on the map. Located at the north end of the 800 block of 19th Street N., at the corner of Herman Street. It’s impossible to miss. Street parking is very haphazard. There is a lot of art to see here, and also a lot of overgrown weeds (depending on the time of year) so wear the right shoes!

Walk with bees (Norf Wall gallery, part 4)

This is another of the many murals found at the old tire factory on 19th near Herman, this one featuring, well, walking with bees. I have noticed bees and wasps as a recurring motif in some of the local murals. This one is a @DoughJoe piece (otherwise known as Yusef Hubb). Turns out the festival that produced these murals got a nice shoutout from the Nashville Scene as a Writer’s Choice in the “Best of” issue – “Best Public Art Project.” And while you’re there, check out this little bit of snark from the Scene – Best Public Art: Murals That Don’t Involve the Word ‘Nashville.’ Hey, we’re all about leaving no art behind here at the blog, but I hear ya, Ashley Spurgeon, I hear ya. As for this non-“Nashville”-containing mural, it’s in the part of the factory that’s often behind a locked gate, so it gets the “hidden art” designation.

Guitar heroes

The Norf Collective continues to expand its repertoire, turning much of the Jefferson Street neighborhood into a growing art gallery. With help from a grant from United Healthcare, several new works have gone up recently, including this enormous Dough Joe piece on the west wall of the Elks Lodge. And I do mean enormous, as the picture above is only part of an even larger piece (see below). Dough Joe told Fox 17 that the main panel pays homage to an epic guitar battle between Johnny Jones and Jimi Hendrix back when the building housed Club Baron. Efforts are underway to get historic status for the building, so hopefully this mural will be in place for a long time.

Located at 2614 Jefferson Street. Plenty of nearby parking.

An icon under the bridge, revisited

When I first saw this Dough Joe portrait of Miles Davis on Herman Street underneath the D. B. Todd Blvd. bridge, I did not realize it was a canvas. You don’t see many of those in outdoor art, but the bridge helps to protect it. The lettering below has changed recently. What used to be a very simple “Inspiration Place” has become an exuberant “Love the Hood.” The portrait of the white-haired individual is someone I recognize but can’t name, [UPDATE: It’s Nikki Giovanni] and is newer than the other two. I also include a stencil that may or may not be a Norf Collective production like the rest of this.

Located below the Dr. D. B. Todd Jr. Blvd. overpass on Hernan Street, between 18th and 19th Aves.

Jay Jenkins and the Norf Collectve

Here’s a short film describing the work of artist Jay Jenkins, who is part of the Norf Collective, which has produced a number of pieces seen around town, working primarily in North Nashville. Definitely worth checking out if you’re interested in where some of this art comes from.
