Off the Wall (Part 10) – Jessi Zazu

One of the last murals to be finished in the Off the Wall project on Charlotte Avenue is this portrait of Jessi Zazu. Zazu was best known as the frontwoman of Those Darlins. It was her death due to cancer in 2017 that led to this mural. Zazu fought a very public battle against her illness. That and her broader legacy as an artist, activist, and a supporter of other artists led friends and family to found Jessi Zazu, Inc. to advance that legacy and the causes important to Zazu. The design of the portrait is by Billy Lilly and features prominently on Jessi Zazu Inc.’s website. They also sell it on a t-shirt. (I have one!) The design was turned into this mural by Emmett Wariner (Zazu’s brother) and Duncan Shea, a member of Music Band who also toured with Those Darlings. The #aintafraid tag references a song of that name that Zazu wrote long before her illness, the title of which became her mantra during her fight against cancer. The mural was sponsored by Novatech.

Off the wall (Part 9)

Donahue

The Off the Wall project finished up recently, celebrating with a launch party a couple weeks ago. And I’m working to wrap up this series documenting it. This piece is another work, titled “Sprite Mural,” is by Brandon Donahue, prominent local artist and TSU art professor. It’s one of the more recent murals to go up as part of this project, and was sponsored by Coca-Cola Consolidated, an independent Coca-Cola bottler. According to the Off the Wall site, the mural “includes North Nashville local boxer, Sena Agbeko, the late hip-hop artist Craig Mack who passed away a week before the mural [was finished].”

Off the Wall (Part 8)

Martin

The Off the Wall Project is finally finished, and I am working to wrap up this series.  I doubt if I will have it done before the September 21st Launch Party, but if you are interested in the Nashville mural scene, you should RSVP for that party. This work is by Julia Martin, owner of the Julia Martin Gallery. Her own artist’s page at that site shows that this work reflects a consistent style. Several of the Off the Wall murals were sponsored by the Buckingham Foundation. Martin was fortunate to be the first to win backing from Buckingham for her mural.

Off the Wall (Part 7)

Booker

Since the Off the Wall project is now finished, I’ll be posting on them fairly frequently over the next two to three weeks to wrap up my own series on it. This mural is by Omari Booker, who just happens to be a graduate of Tennessee State University’s Art Department (being a TSU History prof, I’m more than happy to point to the success of a TSU grad). He explains on his Instagram page that the image is of himself and his older sister when they were kids. Damali Ayana Booker passed away in 2002, and Omari sees this mural as a memorial to her. The mural was sponsored by the Buckingham Foundation.

Off the wall (Part 6)

Quilt

The Off The Wall project on Charlotte, which had been going slowly, has taken off like gangbusters in recent weeks. One mural is left to be finished, and the space will be completely filled with art. This mural, called “The Nashville Quilt,” is not one of the new ones, but has been up for a few months. (I’m an historian, not a journalist!) While the background is by Jake and Hana Elliott of What. Creative Group, the various “patches” are by artists from non-profits that partnered with What.Creative. Lily Clayton Hansen did profiles of each artist for Word of Mouth, with photography by Elizabeth Ratliff. I encourage you to check them out. For one, this post would be impossibly long if I tried to write up each artist, and Hansen and Ratliff have already done a superior job.
