A very sturdy 4th

SummitFlag1

I don’t know who built this wooden flag at the Nashville office of Summit Roofing. Probably some of the fine folks featured on their Facebook page. But I bet it’s designed to hold up in all kinds of weather (as it should). These are roofers, after all. Happy 4th of July everyone!

SummitFllagFull

Located at 655 North Main Street (aka Dickerson Pike) in Goodlettsville, a few blocks north of the intersection with Riverside Parkway. The flag is on the north side of the building. Summit has some parking, but it might be better to park at the Phillips 66 next door.

La Cocina Dominicana

CocinaDomincana

There’s been a bit of a theme of lost art recently on this blog, and here is another example, but with a twist. The vibrant piece above is alive and well and advertising Dominican food on Nolensville Road. But what is now La Cocina Dominicana used to be Carribean Express, with a mural I featured in I’m just here for the food. That mural also featured the out of kilter parking sign, but Grenadian symbolism has now been replaced with Dominican imagery. Sadly, I never went to Carribean Express. I don’t intend to make that mistake again. The mural here is the work of Jose F. Vargas, who has worked on other Latino businesses and who I’ve featured before in posts like Gotta get that bling!.

Located at 4407 Nolensville Pike. There is parking in the back. If you are new to Dominican food, try the mofongo. Chow down and enjoy the art!

Celebrate, donate

Flag

It’s the Fourth of July, and here’s a flag! This particular flag graces the front wall of the Nashville Rescue Mission donation drop off center. The NRC is a Christian oriented social services provider, providing meals for the hungry as well meeting various kinds of other basic needs and a variety of services for the poor and those in need. If you’d like to make an in-kind donation, take a look at the list of needs on this page. They also, of course, take cash donations.

Located at 618 7th Avenue South. This neighborhood has a fair amount of street parking, and it’s fairly easy to park at local businesses. Drop off your donation and enjoy the art!

Another patriotic store

U.S. Discount on Nolensville Rd. is another example of the flag-draped convenience store. We’ve seen this before – I featured A very patriotic convenience store back on the Fourth of July, 2016. I do wonder if these stores, often run by immigrants, are trying to assert their love of country in a political environment that questions that. I suppose I could go inside and ask, but that’s a tough one. This is the south side of U.S. Discount, and there is another flag on the north side (second picture below). The signature is a little tough (first picture below). Looks like George Jalle or Jalli to me, but I have found no such artist on the internet.

Located at 1997 Nolensville Pike. The store is tiny, and has huge amount of parking by comparison. Stop by, grab a soda or a beer, and enjoy the art!

A very patriotic convenience store

Just a hop-skip and an Olympic stone’s throw from my last post is Danial Market. Many convenience stores in Nashville sport large, complex murals, some of which would really require multiple blog posts. But Danial is simple and direct — it’s the flag! Even if the design is a bit creative. Inside, along with the usual, Danial also carries an extensive collection of what I assume are quality bongs.

Have a very spirited Fourth of July!

At 2511 Dickerson Pike.
