The South Wall (Norf Wall gallery, part 9)

img_5326

Returning to an older project (almost finished!), here is the south outside wall of the old tire factory on Herman Street. This wall is almost entirely elaborate tags. Up on the second floor, there’s a tag for “UTL Krew.” The #utlcrew tag on Instagram reveals UTL to be a group of Atlanta artists, who use the Mibs and Seimr tags seen at the west end of the building. It would seem too they are responsible for Unsafe at any speed. At the far east of the wall, a UH tag appears, so locals were also involved in this working this wall. It’s somewhat overgrown, no doubt worse in the summer, but the tracks at least mean you don’t have to fight your way through vegetation. See Part 1 for more information on this site, and see the link for Part 1 on the map.

Located at the north end of the 800 block of 19th Street N., at the corner of Herman Street. It’s impossible to miss. Street parking is very haphazard. There is a lot to see here, and also a lot of overgrown weeds (depending on the time of year) so wear the right shoes!

Be happy! (Norf Wall gallery, part 8)

img_5286-2

Sometimes the light dawns. This piece carries the Rasmo tag you see in a lot of graffiti art installations around town, which is also often found with the “UH” tag. Gee, I wonder what “UH” might stand for. (Well, it actually seems to be used to mean many things.) Turns out #uhcrew is a tag on Instagram, and I need to go back and retag several of my posts. Learn something new every day. This is part of the huge installation I’ve been doling out in pieces at the old tire factory between 19th and 18th Avenues North near Herman Street. This piece faces south is on the southwest side of the complex, visible from 19th. The piece below is at right angles to the one above, facing west. See Part 1 for more information on this site, and see the link for Part 1 on the map.

Don’t mess with that panda! (Norf Wall gallery, part 7)

img_5297-2

Returning to a project I’ve neglected for a while, the Norf Wall. This image is well, a panda. It seems to be signed SMOK, possibly from Atlanta. We all know ATL is the airport code for Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta, right? No matter where you are going, you got to make a connection to Atlanta, and that includes Heaven and Hell. “Ultra Happy” appears elsewhere at the site. While this panda is inside the gate, and this is hidden art depending on the day and time, there is a gigantic Ultra Happy on the exterior that I’ll feature later. In the meantime, be careful about pandas. UPDATE: See part 8 about Ultra Happy and the #uhcrew.

Something abstract

Graffiti art mural street art NashvilleHigh up on the hill near where 33rd meets Trevor, there’s an unusual graffiti installation on a utility building. This is on one of the highest hills in the area, and it sports a small forest of towers, including what looks like a former fire watch tower. So the artist behind this somewhat abstract piece would seem to have been evoking the landscape nearby. Who is the artist? Not sure, but one of the words in the angled view below appears to be “Tier,” which is a tag you see around town in places.

Located near 33rd Avenue North and Trevor Street, uphill from Charlotte. There’s a lot of building in this area, and narrow streets, so parking is problematic.

Not an object (Norf Wall gallery, part 6)

This piece is signed by ArJae @caffeinedream. The artist also apparently goes by Sanctus ArJae Syyreal. Oddly, this piece doesn’t seem to be featured on his Instagram page. Striking as it is, I have to tag it “hidden art,” because it’s one of the pieces that is usually behind a locked gate, in the interior courtyard of the old tire factory on 19th near Herman. See Part 1 for a description of how this and the other pieces at this site came to be.

By the power of Grayskull! (Norf Wall gallery, part 5)

Battle mural street art Nashville

It does sort of look like He-Man, doesn’t it? This is another of the pieces inside the old tire factory at 19th Ave near Herman. Our hero holding back (barely) the torrent of power (of her voice? of her rage? of her rainbow soul?) and his adversary are often behind a locked gate, so this qualifies as hidden art. The piece is signed @alivepaint, which is the moniker of Memphis artist Jamond Bullock. See Part 1 for a description of how this and the other pieces at this site came to be.

Walk with bees (Norf Wall gallery, part 4)

Bees mural street art Nashville

This is another of the many murals found at the old tire factory on 19th near Herman, this one featuring, well, walking with bees. I have noticed bees and wasps as a recurring motif in some of the local murals. This one is a @DoughJoe piece (otherwise known as Yusef Hubb). Turns out the festival that produced these murals got a nice shoutout from the Nashville Scene as a Writer’s Choice in the “Best of” issue – “Best Public Art Project.” And while you’re there, check out this little bit of snark from the Scene – Best Public Art: Murals That Don’t Involve the Word ‘Nashville.’ Hey, we’re all about leaving no art behind here at the blog, but I hear ya, Ashley Spurgeon, I hear ya. As for this non-“Nashville”-containing mural, it’s in the part of the factory that’s often behind a locked gate, so it gets the “hidden art” designation.
